Given the need of unbiased analytics using actual game data, ClubLacrosse.org has released their Club and Division Rankings! Based upon feedback from college coaches, club directors, event directors, players, and players’ parents, having metrics based upon empirical data will add to the transparency, safety, and knowledge within the Club Lacrosse community.

Club ranking can be found at https://members.clublacrosse.org/clubs

Team rankings (updated daily) can be found at https://members.clublacrosse.org/teams

For analyzing Clubs, it has been determined that the most fair way to grade a Club is based upon their Win Percentage. Aggregating teams’ Strength of Schedule (SOS * ), and Opponents Strength of Schedule (oSOS **) is not defendable. Win percentage is empirical and not controversial.

For ranking teams within Divisions, feedback was to utilize a data driven framework that is also employed at the collegiate level. The “Rating Percentage Index” (https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/championships/sports/lacrosse/d1/men/D1MLA_RPI_FAQ.pdf) is based upon a team’s Win Percentage (WP), SOS, and oSOS. The index is computed as follows:

RPI   =   25% x WP   +   50% x SOS   +   25% x oSOS

Requirements to have an RPI as follows:

  1. The Parent Club must have multiple divisions (a club of 1 team of mercenaries typically does not exist very long and is not stable enough to be included)
  2. The Parent Club must have a website (if they do not have a website, they typically come and go quickly). Website must have contact information on it.
  3. For a Team to be ranked, they must have played >= 8 games
  4. The team needs to be considered a “AA” team. Single A teams typically come and go and add controversial noise to the results. The teams must be the best players within that Division that the Club puts on the field.

Game data is sourced from TourneyMaster.com and TourneyMachine.com. Mapping of teams to their correct clubs is performed by ClubLacrosse.org. To ensure fairness, if games or events or clubs are missing from the datasets ClubLacrosse.org has utilities on their website for requests to add the data. If teams do not see their games, we encourage the players and parents to ask their Club Director to request coverage.

* Strength of Schedule is the average Win Percentage of the teams you play. For all games played, use recursive mathematics to complete the opponents win percentage, then divide by the number of games. This answers the question “Are the team’s opponents strong competition?”

** Opponents Strength of Schedule is computed using recursive mathematics as well. Determine who the opponents have played, compute their win percentages, and then divide by the number of their games. This answers the question “Are the opponents the team is playing facing off against strong competition or not?”.

ClubLacrosse.org is a public utility website for the lacrosse community. Players can store their statistics (goals, assists, ground balls, forced turnovers, saves, faceoff wins, draw controls, etc. It is based upon the collective feedback from all stakeholders and is community driven. College Coaches add player statistics to their “mosaic” when recruiting players. Given their heavy use of statistics in every aspect of the game at the collegiate level, the earlier players and parents start storing their statistics, the more easily a college coach can find their perfect match.
